Robert was born at East Runton, Norfolk, about 1889, a son of Robert Abbs. No other details of Robert’s early life are known. He cannot be conclusively identified on any civil record. Note: there is no actual evidence that his first names were anything other than Robert William, and this are confirmed by the marriage register entry at Saint Margaret’s Church.

Thomas Tracey Aldous
A Sergeant with 1st Aircraft Supply Depot, Thomas died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 27.
Thomas was born at Hulver, Suffolk, in 1891, a son of John and Emily Aldous. In 1901 his family lived at The Police Station, Earl Soham, where his father was a Police Sergeant. In 1911 his family lived at Albert Road, Framlingham, and Thomas was a carpenter’s apprentice. Later his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland.

William George Aldred
A Private with the 5th Battalion, William died on 9th of April 1917 at the age of 27.
William was born at Shipmeadow, near Beccles, in 1890 (note some sources state Coddenham, or Beccles, as his place of birth). He was a son of William and Charlotte Jane Aldred. In 1891 his family lived at Beccles and, by 1901, at The Street, Blundeston. Later his parents lived at 2 Crossway Cottages, Corton.

Karl Ferdinand Franck William Arnold
A Captain with 1st Bn., Karl died on 23rd of April 1915 at the age of 27.
Karl was born at Penarth, Cardiff on 19 March 1888, a son of Franck Thomas and Edith Maud Arnold. His grandfather was Reverend Charles Thomas Arnold, of Rugby, and his grandmother, Susanna Magdalena Arnold, lived at 4 High Street, Lowestoft. See house on LowestoftOldAndNow.org

William Henry Beedom Ayers
A Captain with the Royal Engineers, William died on 7th of June 1944 at the age of 27.
William was born at Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, on 8 June 1916, a son of William Henry and Marguerite Mary Ayers. In 1921 his family lived at 4 Vobslei Road, Mells, Frome, Somerset. By 1929 they were living at Corton and in 1939 their address was 1 Fair View, Corton.
William was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 12 September 1942 (London Gazette 9 October 1942).

Owen Hedley Balls

Owen was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Charles Thomas Coleby and Lily Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 20 Alma Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Owen worked as a grocer's assistant.
On 20 March 1913 Owen married Annie Florence Rutter at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Owen was a grocer living at 12 Alma Road, and Annie lived at 7 Saint Margaret's Road. Their home was at 19 Melbourne Road, Lowestoft.

Christopher Maurice Baxter
A Trimmer with Steam Trawler Newhaven (Lowestoft), Christopher died on 15th of January 1940 at the age of 27.
Christopher was born at Barnby on 12 May 1912, a son of Evelyn Rendlesham Hunt (nee Baxter) and step-son of Walter Hunt. In 1921 he lived with his grandparents, Walter and Martha Baxter, at Barnby.
In 1939 his family lived at Waveney Cottages, Barnby, and Christopher was a deep sea fisherman.

Alan David Bayfield
A Second Lieutenant, Alan died on the 15th of February 1942 aged 27.
Alan was born at Lowestoft on 27 March 1914, a son of Alfred and Ada Bayfield. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 14 May 1914 and his family lived at the Anchor Hotel, High Street, where is father was the publican. In 1921 their home was at 159 High Street. By 1939 Alan’s parents were living at 5 The Esplanade.

Alan Harry Reynolds Bevan
A Captain with the 9th Bhopal Infantry, Alan died on 30th of December 1920 at the age of 27.
Alan was born at Lowestoft on 25 June 1893, a son of Henry William and Clarissa Elizabeth Bevan. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 23 July 1893 and his family lived at 1 Pier Terrace, Lowestoft. By 1901 his family were living at 9 High Street, Lowestoft. Albert Russell Mills Bradbury
A Private with the 11th Battalion. Albert died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 27.
Albert was born at Lowestoft on 7 May 1889, a son of George and Ann Elizabeth Bradbury: his father was a fish merchant. Albert was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 June 1889.

Thomas John Brown
A Corporal with 2nd Bn., Thomas died on 9th of May 1915 at the age of 27.
Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1888, a son of Thomas William and Harriet Eliza Brown. By 1891 Thomas' father had died and Thomas, and his two brothers, were resident at Oulton Workhouse. Thomas' mother married Henry Sarll in 1894 and the family then lived at 1 Maltster's Score. In 1901 Thomas worked as a baker's lad. By 1911 his family were living at 31 Princes Road, Lowestoft, and later Thomas' mother lived at 15 Water Lane, Lowestoft.

George William Brown
A Sapper, George died on the 28th of March 1915 at the age of 27.
George was born at Oulton in 1888, a son of Samuel and Anna Brown of 7 Fir Lane, Lowestoft.
George enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment, at Great Yarmouth, and had service number 6430. At some point he transferred to the Royal Engineers, with service number 19721.

Lovewell Bertie Bryant
A Lance Corporal with the 9th Battalion, Lovewell died on 3rd of May 1917 at the age of 27.
Lovewell was born at Lowestoft in 1890, a son of George Henry and Harriet Emily Bryant. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 25 March 1890, and his family lived at 44 North Raglan Street. By 1901 they were living at 48 Milton Road, and later at 12 Cathcart Street.

George Ernest Bryant
A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 27.
George was born at Saint Thomas’, Norwich, in 1890, a son of George Robert and Emma Amelia Bryant. In 1891 his family lived at 14 Swansea Road, Norwich. By 1901 George’s mother had died and his family lived at 33 Calvert Street, Norwich. In 1911 George lived with his grandmother, Amelia Bryant, at 33 Calvert Street, and his father lived at 9A Beresford Road, Lowestoft.
In 1916 George married Grace Mildred Betts at Norwich. She also lived at 9A Beresford Road.

Albert Butcher
A Private with 9th Bn., Albert died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 27.
Albert was born at Ilketshall Saint Andrew, Suffolk, in 1889, a son of James and Mary Ann Butcher. Albert was baptised at Saint Andrew’s Church, Ilketshall, on 23 March 1889, and his family lived at Ilketshall. In 1891 his family lived at Ilketshall Saint Andrew. By 1911 Albert was lodging with Elizabeth Frost, at The Street, Lound, and working as a cowman on a farm.

Lloyd George Remus Butcher
A Sapper with 705 General Construction Company, Lloyd died on 28th of May 1940, aged 27.
Lloyd was born at Lowestoft on 3 February 1913, a son of Robert George and Gertrude Butcher. In 1921 his family lived at 90 Seago Street and this was still their home in 1939.
In 1935 Lloyd married Edith Rosa Juler: this was registered in the Lothingland district. By 1940 their home was at 25 Kirkley Gardens.
Lloyd enlisted in the Army at Ipswich on 5 March 1940. He joined the Royal Engineers and was posted to 705 General Construction Company in France.

Benjamin William Chatteris
An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, Benjamin died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 27.
Benjamin was born at Lowestoft on 25 November 1889, a son of Alfred Charles and Elizabeth Chatteris. In 1891 his family lived at 85 Saint Margaret’s Road. By 1901 his mother had died and his family lived at Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street.
On 27 December 1914 Benjamin married Rosa Juler. Benjamin was a fisherman and they both gave their address as 29 Tennyson Avenue. They lived at 85 Kimberley Road, and later Rosa lived at 37 Payne Street.

Leonard Cook
A Corporal with the 47th Battalion, Leonard died on 25th of January 1917 at the age of 27.
Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 15 May 1889, a son of Henry John and Eliza Cook. In 1891 his family lived at 48 Seago Street. Leonard was a pupil at Christchurch School until 2 March 1896, when he joined Saint John’s School. From 15 December 1896 he was a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. By 1901 his family were living at Battery Green Road.
Leonard emigrated to Canada in 1907. His brother Clifford also moved to Canada.

Herbert Ambrose Copping
A Private with the 3/6th Battalion, Herbert died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 27.
Herbert was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk, on 13 July 1890, a son of John and Martha Copping. He was baptised at Woodbridge on 31 August 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Cumberland Street, Woodbridge. By 1901 they were living at 17 Hamilton Street, Ramsey, Essex, and this was still their home in 1911.

Albert Edward Cornish
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Albert died on 21st of September 1918 aged of 27.
Albert was born at Fisherton Delamere, Wiltshire, on 4 June 1891, a son of James William and Frances Helen Cornish. He was baptised at Fisherton Delamere on 26 July 1891 and his family lived at Bapton. By 1901 they were living at the Dairy House, at the College of Agriculture, North Clanford, Hampshire. In 1911 his family lived at Benacre and Albert was a farm stockman.

Frederick Edmund Crake
A Private with the 9th Battalion, Frederick died on 12th of September 1917 at the age of 27.
Frederick, also known as Freddie, was born at Pakefield on 5 April 1890, a son of Benjamin and Ada Crake. In 1891 his family lived at 86 Pakefield Street, where his father kept a butcher’s shop. This was his parents’ home throughout Frederick’s life. On 1 July 1895 Frederick became a pupil at Kirkley School and, on 13 April 1904, he became a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science. In 1911 Frederick was a butcher’s assistant and believed to have worked with his father.

Ernest Herbert Dale
A Private with 1st Bn., Ernest died on 8th of May 1915 at the age of 27.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 7 June 1888, a son of Frederick and Charlotte Elizabeth Dale. In 1891 his family lived at 60 West Bevan Street, Lowestoft. From 11 October 1897 Ernest attended Saint John's School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 14 Stanford Street. By 1901 they were living at 73 Wollaston Road. In 1911 his family lived at 61 Norwich Road and, later, at 34 Windsor Road Lowestoft.

Thomas Francis Eglington
A Cook with Sailing Trawler Young Bert (Lowestoft), Thomas died on 30th of July 1917 aged 27.
Thomas was born at Great Witchingham, Norfolk, on 5 April 1889, a son of Francis Ward and Elizabeth Eglington. He was baptised at Great Witchingham on 19 April 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Bawdeswell Road, Whitwell, Norfolk. By 1901 his family had moved to Hackford, Norfolk.

Arthur Eric Fenton
A Sergeant with the 6th Battalion, Arthur died on 16th of April 1943 aged 27.
Arthur was born at Nottingham a son of Arthur and Emma Haynes Fenton. He was baptised at Saint Saviour's Church, Nottingham, on 19 January 1916 and his family lived at 57 Pyatt Street. Arthur was a Fellow of the Library Association.
Arthur married Winifred Annie Brooks, at Mansfield, in 1941, and they had a home at 21 Jenfold Avenue, Mansfield. Winifred later moved to Lowestoft and remarried in 1948.

Leonard Henry Alonzo Fisher

A Rifleman with 1/5th Bn., Herbert Frank died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 27.

Harry Arthur Victor Freestone
A Driver with the Royal Army Service Corps, Harry died on 27th of May 1946 aged 27.
Harry was born at Lowestoft on 15 September 1918, a son of Frank William and Alice Mary Freestone. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 October 1918. Throughout his life his family lived at 28 Jacob's Street, Lowestoft. In 1939 Harry worked as a stores clerk.
Little is known of Harry’s military service, or his cause of death, but he had been discharged from the Army before he died at Melton, Suffolk.

Herbert Garrod
A Private with the 8th Battalion, Herbert died on 19th of May 1917 at the age of 27.
Herbert was born at Calton Colville in 1890, a son of John and Elizabeth Garrod. Herbert was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 1 May 1891, and his family lived at Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville. In 1901 the family lived ‘near Low Farm’, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 at Hall Cottages Carlton Colville, and Herbert worked as a cowman on a farm.

Philip Arthur Goode
A Pilot Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Philip died on 2nd of May 1941 aged 27.
Philip was born at North Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, on 19 October 1913 a son of Arthur and Elena Goode. In 1921 they lived at Ghetty, Rubery, Birmingham.
On 19 December 1936 Philip married Evelyn Hilda Agnes Grice at Saint Margaret’s Church. Philip was a storeman living at 272 Raglan Street and Evelyn lived at 57 Reeve Street. By 1939 they were living at 234 Raglan Street and Philip was the chief managing clerk at a rope manufacturer.

James William Gower
A Seaman with Steam Drifter Reliance (Lowestoft), James died on 7th of October 1917 at the age of 27.
James was born at Carlton Colville in 1890, a son of James Henry and Harriet Gower. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 October 1890. The 1891 census shows James, and his mother, with his maternal grandmother, Louisa Solomon, at Ship Corner, Carlton Colville. In 1901 James, and his mother, were with his maternal grandmother, Louisa Solomon, at Morses Cottages, Carlton Colville.

Jack Gravells
A Private with the 4th Battalion. Jack died on 14th of February 1942 at the age of 27.
Jack was born at Lowestoft on 23 June 1914, a son of Joseph and Florence Gravells. In 1911 his family had lived at 3 Turner's Cottages, Saint John's Road, Lowestoft. By 1921 they were living at 13 Clemence Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1939 at which time Jack was a fish worker.

Bertie Harold Harvey
A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Thistle. Bertie died on 8th of May 1941 at the age of 27.
Bertie was born at Lowestoft on 11 November 1913, a son of Henry James and Alice Harvey. In 1921 his family lived at 51 Carlton Road, Lowestoft.
On 19 June 1937 Bertie married Marjorie Gladys Crickmore at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Bertie was working as a fisherman, and Marjorie a silk weaver. They both lived at 7 Avondale Road, Lowestoft. By 1939 they were living at 78 Somerton Road, Lowestoft. In 1939 Bertie was Skipper of the Lowestoft trawler Helping Hand (LT 1239).

Arthur Ernest Charles Harvey
A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Bredon. Arthur died on 8th of February 1943 at the age of 27.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 16 September 1915, a son of Charles and Maude Harvey. In 1921 his family lived at 2 Wellington Road, Pakefield.
In 1935 Arthur married Gertrude May Lydia Skeet at Lowestoft. In 1939 they lived at 187 A Economy Road, and Arthur worked as a builder's bricklayer's labourer.

Thomas Head
An Assistant Steward with S.S. Orford (Barrow), Thomas died on 1st of June 1940 aged 27.
Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 2 June 1912, a son of Thomas and Ellen Maria Head. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 21 June 1912 and his family lived at Pendeen Villa, Winnipeg Road. By 1939 his family were living at the Globe Inn, High Street, where Thomas’ father was the licensee. Later his parents lived at 14 Yeovil Road.

George William Horne
A Seaman with H.M.S. Mastiff, George died on 20th of November 1939 aged 27.
George was born at Kessingland on 4 October 1912, a son of Harry and May Rebecca Horne. George was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 6 April 1913, and his family lived at lived at 1 Poplar Terrace, Kessingland. By 1939 George's family lived at Britannia Cottages, Field Lane, Kessingland.

Edward Henry John Howlett
A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Curacoa. Edward died on 2nd of October 1942 at the age of 27.
Edward was born at Lowestoft on 30 July 1915, a son of Arthur Henry John and Rose Howlett. He was baptised at Saint on 15 August 1915 and his family lived at 30 Ontario Road, and this was still the family home in 1939.
In 1935 Edward married Mabel Florence Crawford. In 1939 they lived at North Villa, Birds Lane, Lowestoft, and Edward was a trawl fish packer. Later Mabel lived at 6 Meadow Cottages, Oulton Broad.

Harold Hume
A Private with 6th Bn. Harold died on 1st of August 1943 at the age of 27.
Harold was born at Lowestoft on 16 August 1914, a son of William Charles and Harriet Hume. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 3 September 1914 and his family lived at 81 May Road.
In 1941 Harold married Norah May Catchpole. Their marriage was registered in the Stafford district. In the mid-1940s Norah lived at Walton, Stone, Staffordshire.
Harold was working as a cocktail barman when he joined the Army.

Hamilton Ray Jackson
A Second Lieutenant with the Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport, Hamilton died on 26th of July 1917 at the age of 27.
Hamilton was born at Lowestoft on 23 September 1889, a son of Allan Heslop Jackson and Eva Lindley Jackson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 28 October 1889. In 1891 his family lived at 55 High Street, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at Thatched House, Beccles.
From June 1899 Hamilton attended Sir John Leman School, Beccles, and then, from December 1899, attended Christ’s Hospital School, Hertford.

Richard Sydney Jermany
A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Pelagia, Richard died on 28th of November 1916 at the age of 27.
Richard was born at Wicklewood, Norfolk, on 1 July 1889, a son of Benjamin and Harriet Jermany. In 1891 his family lived at Low Street, Crownthorpe, Norfolk. Between 22 January 1894 and 23 April 1903 Richard attended Hardingham School. He left school to go into agricultural work. By 1901 the family were living at Denmark Green, Hardingham.

Edith Ruby Lambert
A Civilian, Edith died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 27.
Edith was born at Lowestoft on 17 July 1914, a daughter of John Stephen Stanley and Ruby Beatrice Lambert. She was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 8 October 1914, and her family lived at 1 Compass Street, which would be her home for the whole of her life. In 1939 Edith worked as a shop assistant.
Edith died at London Road North during the air raid on 13 January 1942.
Edith's uncle Herbert Lambert was killed in 1915 whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers.
