Richard Adcock

A Private with 8th Battalion. Richard died on 26th of September 1916 at the age of 21.

Richard was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Thomas Charles and Elizabeth Adcock. In 1901 his family lived at 14 Saint John's Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at Brickyard Cottages, Oulton Broad, and Richard worked as a bench boy at a saw mill. Later his mother lived at Colville Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft.

Peter Allen

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Peter died on 20th of August 1942 aged 21. 

Peter was born at Lowestoft on 15 June 1921, a son of Samuel Walter and Gertrude Louisa Allen. In 1921 they lived at 121 London Road South, Lowestoft. By 1939 his parents were living at 12 Enstone Road, Lowestoft.  

In 1939 Peter was living at 55 Cozens Road, Norwich, and he worked as a Post Office soring clerk and telegraphist. 

Alexander Alves

A Lieutenant with the Army Service Corps, Alexander died on 26th of May 1918 at the age of 21. 

Alexander was born at Pinchbeck, Spalding, Lincolnshire, in 1896, a son of John Herbert and Minnie Alves. In 1901 his family lived at Rhodesian Villa, Winsover Road, Spalding, and in 1911 they lived at High Street. Spalding. Later his parents lived at Vernona House, Th Marina, Lowestoft, and then Colville House, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft. 

Alfred Paget Bacon

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Alfred died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Alfred was born at Walthamstow in 1895, a son of Jasper and Edith Mary Bacon. He was baptised at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Walthamstow, on 18 September 1895. By 1901 Alfred’s father had died and his mother had married William Sarbutt and the family lived at 37 Tyrolean Square, Great Yarmouth. By 1911 they were living at 4 Fleggs Cottages, Moyse Road, Oulton, and Alfred was an assistant to a baker and confectioner. 

Thomas Edward Baldry

A Lance Corporal with 9th Bn., Thomas died on 14th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Frederick John and Hannah Baldry. In 1901 his family lived at 16 Haward Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 his family lived at 55 Haward Street and Thomas was a carpenter's apprentice.  

Thomas enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He served with the Suffolk Regiment.

Ernest  William Baldry

Ernest William Baldry

A Private with 7th Bn. Ernest died on 9th of April 1917 at the age of 17. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of George and Jane Baldry. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 30 October 1896 and his family lived at Melbourne Road. In 1901 his family lived at 36 Melbourne Road and this was still their home in 1911 when Ernest worked as an errand boy at a drapers. 

Hedley Owen Balls

A Leading Steward with H.M.S. Cocker. Hedley died on 4th of June 1942 at the age of 21. 

Hedley was born at Lowestoft on 1 April 1921, a son of Charles Albert and Elizabeth May Balls. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 22 April 1921 and his family lived at 39 Kimberley Road. By 1939 his family were living at 10 Minden Road and Headley worked as a shop assistant (provisions). 

During World War Two Headley served on board H.M.S. Cocker. His ship was torpedoed and sunk, east of Tobruk, by a German motor-torpedo boat.  

Harry Balls

A Private with 4th Bn., Harry died on 15th of February 1942 at the age of 21. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft in 1921, a son of Harry Palmer and Elsie Maud Balls of 26 Bruce Street, Lowestoft.

Bertram George Bardwell

A Gunner with 118 Field Regt., Bertram died on 10th of December 1942 at the age of 21. 

Bertram was born at Great Yarmouth in 1921, a son of Bertram and Ruth Bardwell. His family lived at 20 Regent Road, Great Yarmouth. In 1939 they lived at 104 Regent Road, Great Yarmouth, and later his parents lived at Lowestoft Suffolk.

Bernard George Barker

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Bernard died on 4th of October 1944 aged 21. 

Bernard was born on 17 February 1923, a son of Frank Nelson and Lily Beatrice Barker. In 1939 his family lived at The Police Station, Mendham, where his father was a Police Constable. Bernard worked from the London and North Eastern Railway at Harleston Station and was a well known sportsman, playing cricket and football with local clubs. 
By 1944 Bernard’s parents were living at 10 Lorne Park Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 50 Worthing Road.    

William Woodthorpe Barnard Barnard-Smith

A Second Lieutenant with 38th Brigade, William died on 21st of October 1916 at the age of 21. 

William was born at The Rectory, Thurlton, Norfolk, on 6 August 1895, a son of The Rev. Barnard Gooch Barnard-Smith and Fanny Barnard-Smith. He was baptised at Thurlton on 12 September 1895. His father was the Rector at North Cove, Suffolk, and later Rector of Boxford, Suffolk. In 1901 his family lived at The Uplands, Carlton Colville, and in 1911 William was a pupil at Felsted School. Subsequently he was a farmer at The Uplands Estate, Carlton Colville. 

Frank Baxter

A Private  with 1st Bn., Frank died on 4th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Frederick and Harriet Sarah Baxter. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 January 1895 and his family lived at 41 Lawson Road. By 1901 they were living at 19 Cleveland Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Frank worked as a stonemason's apprentice. Later his parents lived at Burleigh, Kirkley Cliff Road, Lowestoft. 

Herbert Stanley Beckett

A Private with the 52nd Battalion, Herbert died on 24th of March 1918, and the age of 21.

Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Richard and Edith Beckett. Herbert's first names were Herbert Stanley but he served in the Australian Army as Stanley Beckett and this is how he is commemorated. 

John William Bell

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, John died on 8th of November 1941 aged 21. 

BENNETT Ivan F W

Ivan Frederick William Bennett

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Arethusa, Ivan died on 18th of November 1942 aged 21. 

Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 16 June 1921, a son of Frederick James and Esther Maria Bennett. In 1939 Ivan’s family lived at 9 Marlborough Road.

Ivan was engaged to be married to Miss Hilda Andrews of 41 Penlee Street, Penzanze.

James Alfred Bramble

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, James died on 30th of May 1943 aged 21. 

James was born at Poplar, London, in 1922, a son of James Alfred and Kate Kathleen Bramble.

James married Edna Lilian Maud Bramble, in the Wells district, in early 1943. They had a home at Home Farm, Upper Coxley, Wells, Somerset. Edna later lived at Lowestoft where she remarried and lived at 44 Elmhurst Avenue.

James joined the air force in 1938. 

John Edward Brittain

A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, John died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 21.

Victor Alexander John Brundle

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Victor died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 21. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Charles and Sarah Elizabeth Brundle. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 29 August 1897 and his family lived at 28 Cambridge Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Victor was an assistant at a bookstall. 

Joseph Bryant

A Corporal with the 1st Battalion, Joseph died on 14th of June 1944 aged 21. 

The Army Roll of Honour for World War Two states that Joseph was born at Lanarkshire, Scotland, and that he was living at Portsmouth when he enlisted. Commonwealth War Graves records state that his parents were William and Margaret Bryant. However, no civil records of his birth, or his parents, have been found.

In 1941 Joseph married Doris May Godfrey, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Doris’ family lived at 4 Winnipeg Road. Doris remarried in 1952.

Robert George Frederick Bryant

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Robert died on 28 February 1943 aged 21.

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 10 July 1921, a son of Frederick William and Louisa Annie Bryant. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 27 July 1921, and his family lived at 26 Whapload Road. Robert’s father died and his mother remarried. In 1939 Robert and his family were living at 26 Whapload Road and Robert was a tugboat deck hand. 

Walter Samuel Bucknole

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Walter died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 21. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 4 March 1893, a son of Frank and Harriet Bucknole. In 1891 his family lived at 78 Norwich Road. By 1914 they were living at 43 Stanford Street and later lived at 44 Windsor Road, Lowestoft.

Walter joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 14 March 1912. 

In 1912 he worked on the trawler Nimrod, LT 589; Glory, LT 1027; and in 1913 the Twelve YH 562; and the Coronella LT 36.

Clifford Charles Bunn

A Corporal with the 9th Battalion, Clifford died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 21. 

Clifford was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of Thomas George and Ellen Bunn. In 1901 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby, and this was still their address in 1911 when Clifford worked as a butcher’s boy. By 1919 his family were living at Syringa Cottage, Carlton Colville, and later his parents lived at Elm Tree Road, Carlton Colville.

William Jonathan Burwood

A Private with the 7th Battalion, William died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 21. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 21 February 1897, a son of William and Charlotte Burwood. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 12 March 1897 and his family lived at Walton Road. In 1901 the family’s address was 16 Walton Road and this was William’s family home for the rest of his life. William attended Hervey Street Infant School and, on 8 January 1906 joined Saint John’s School, but left three days later to go to a ‘nearer school.’ In 1911 William was a baker’s errand boy. 

Lewis Button

An Engineman, Lewis died on 26th October 1916 at the age of 21.

Lewis was born at Hulver on 20th March 1895, a son of Charles and Laura Button. In 1911 Lewis lived with his parents at The Street, Hulver, and Lewis was a gardener. 

Lewis married Lilian Wincup at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 24th August 1914. At that time Lewis was working as a fisherman and both he, and Lilian, lived at Kirkley (address unknown).

Stanley Arthur Catchpole

A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, Stanley died on 29th of April 1918 at the age of 21. 

Stanley was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of Edward and Ellen M. Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 May 1897, and his family lived at High Street, Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland, and by 1911 their address was Grass Holme, Church Road

A Sergeant with 9th Bn., Hedley died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Hedley was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of Thomas James and Edith Emma Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 6 June 1897. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland, and later at 16 John Street Lowestoft.

In 1911 Hedley was the Deck Hand Cook on the trawler Auld Land Syne, LT 300, at Newlyn, Cornwall. 

Charles Edward Catchpole

A Second Lieutenant with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 21. 

Charles was born at Kessingland in 1895, a son of George and Elizabeth Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 17 May 1896. In 1901 his family lived at Eddystone House, Church Road, Kessingland, and this was Charles’ home for the rest of his life. In 1911 Charles was a junior clerk working for a fish seller.

George Henry Catchpole

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Thomas Cornwall, George died on 29th of October 1918 aged 21. 

NOTE: George's registered first name was Gordon and this is the name used on his baptism record and the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. However, his Royal Naval Reserve records and all relevant naval records give his first name as George.

Gordon Ernest Catchpole

A Private with 4th Bn., Gordon died on 14th of February 1942 at the age of 21. 

Gordon was born at Lowestoft on 20 October 1920, a son of Arnold Lancelot and Violet Annie Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 19 November 1920 and his family lived at 57 Bevan Street. By 1939 the family were living at 35 Lorne Park Road, Lowestoft.

Edward Swan Chilvers

A Private with H Battalion, Edward died on 25th of November 1917 at the age of 21. 

Edward was born at Kirkley in 1896, a son of Elizabeth Caroline Chilvers. In 1901 he lived with his mother, and grandmother Sarah Chilvers, at 462 London Road. By 1911 he was living with his mother, brother and sister, at 7 Lincoln’s Buildings, and Edward was an apprentice shipwright. Later his family lived at 6 Lincoln’s Buildings. In 1915 Edward’s mother married Thomas Swan and they lived at 10 Strand Street.

A Lance Corporal with the 1/4th Battalion, Edward died on 28th of February 1917 at the age of 21. 

Edward was born at Blundeston in 1896, a son of William and Mary Ann Church. In 1901 his family lived ‘near Crossways’, Blundeston. In 1911 they lived at Hall Lane, Lowestoft, and Edward was a farm labourer. By 1914 his family lived at Meadow Cottage, Oulton, and later his parents lived at Church Farm, Oulton Road Lowestoft.

Edward enlisted in the Army at Ipswich. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 2452, and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion in France. 

Leslie Clare

A Leading Radio Mechanic with H.M.S. Martin. Leslie died on 10th of November 1942 at the age of 21. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1920, a son of Ronald Bertie and Emily Elizabeth Clare. Leslie was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 4 January 1921 and his family lived at 12 Norwich Road. By 1939 his family were living at 4 Haward Street.

Leslie was serving on board H.M.S. Martin when the ship was sunk, off Algiers, by a torpedo from submarine U-431. One hundred and twenty six of the crew died.

A Flying Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Fernley died on 26th of April 1945 aged 21. 

Fernley was born at Lowestoft in 1923, a son of John Thomas and Mildred May Clarke. By 1945 his family were living at 141 Beccles Road, Oulton Broad.

William Cockel

A Private with the 12th/13th Battalion, William died on 29th of May 1918 aged 21. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Daniel John and Matilda Cockel. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Thurston Road, and by 1911 at 11 Erskine Place, Factory Street. Records show a variety of spellings for his surname. 

Walter Sidney Coleman

A Private with 7th Battalion, Walter died on 4th of November 1915 at the age of 21. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 9 May 1894, a son of George and Henrietta Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 30 May 1894, and his family lived at 61 Reeve Street, Lowestoft. By 1901 Walter’s mother had died and the family lived at 3 Sudbury Cottages, Bevan Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 his family lived at 71 Norwich Road, Lowestoft, and Walter was a stable boy working for the Great Eastern Railway (G.E.R.). Later his father lived at 8 Winnipeg Road, Lowestoft. 

William Edward Cook

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Grouse., William died on 26th of May 1917 at the age of 21. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 11 July 1895, a son of William James and Edith Jane Cook. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 11 August 1895, and his family lived at 28 Spurgeon Street. In 1901 his family lived at Spurgeon Street. By 1915 his family were living at 1 Barcham Street, The Beach, Lowestoft, and later at 70 The Hemplands.

In 1911 William worked on the trawler Early Morn.

Alonzo Joseph Corbin

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Alonzo died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 21. 

Alonzo was born at Lowestoft on 14 July 1893, a son of Joseph William and Charlotte Corbin. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's church on 22 January 1896 and his family lived at 20 Union Road. In 1901 his family lived at 68 Stanford Street, and by 1911 they were living at 29 Sandringham Road Lowestoft (Note his parents were often known as Joseph and Lottie).

Charles Edward Cracknell

A Private with 1st Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Charles died on 25th of August 1918, at the age of 20 years. 

Charles was born at Lound on 29 March 1897, a son of George and Louisa Cracknell. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew's Church, Corton, on 2 May 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Back Lane, Lound, and, by 1911, at Fern House, Back Lane, Lound, and Charles was a farm labourer. Later his parents lived at The Corner, Lound, Lowestoft.

Percival Joseph Cracknell

A Driver with 22nd Battery, Percival died on 9th of May 1915 at the age of 21. 

Percival was born at Lound on 28 September 1894, a son of George and Louisa Cracknell. he was baptised at Saint Bartholomew's Church, Corton, on 4 November 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Back Lane, Lound, and, by 1911, at Fern House, Back lane, Lound. Later his parents lived at The Corner, Lound, Lowestoft.

Victor Burkett Crosswell

A Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Victor died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 21. 

Victor was born at Portsmouth on 11 June 1897, a son of Daniel and Louisa Crosswell. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Portsea, on 25 June 1897 and his family lived at 86 Dicken’s Road. In 1901 they lived at 30 Baker Street, Portsmouth.
